At the Cutting Edge
Lasers in Design Technology
+
These days, lasers are industrial cutting tools, but they have also made their way into high school design and technology classes. In this program we see how lasers are used in industry, how they can be used in schools, then see how their use is integrated into two very different projects.

Automotive Design
CAD-CAM Case Studies
+
This program looks at two examples of innovative automotive design. Part one features the 2002 winner of the prestigious Pforzheim German Transportation Design Forum competition. The award-winning car design was for Aborigines living in remote rural areas. In part two we visit Drew Price Engineering, manufacturers of innovative high quality go kart products including axle components, bodywork, brake hardware and the Arrow chassis. DPE develop their products through computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-assisted machinery (CAM).

Blogging
Serious Media or Just a Rant?
+
Not everyone is happy with traditional forms of media. Concerns about independence and a decline in public debate have left many feeling that their voice will never be heard or considered. However, the internet has meant that ordinary people can be both producer and distributor of information and opinions through web-logs (blogs). However, the question still remains; are their voices really being heard? Having an online presence is one thing, but how do you attract attention to your blog when there are already 8.5 million bloggers out there? This program will inform students about the emergence of blogs, look at their associated negatives and positives and debate whether they really are an opportunity for the alternative voice or just uncensored rants.

Building Bridges
The Physics of Construction
+
The nuts & bolts of building bridges. What factors to consider when you build a bridge and what?s the Physics behind them? Introducing the concepts of Stress, Strain and Young?s Modulus to describe the structural properties of building materials. This program examines the variety of bridge designs that these materials can be put to: how they work and why. It examines a bridge plan and uses concepts of Torque and Static orces to see if it stands the test of its load. Finally it challenges students to design and test their own bridges from simple materials.
